I know for a fact that I had never tasted nor wondered what Malay food was like until I showed up in Malaysia. After a few weeks and dozens of meals in the country, I’m still not 100% sure what Malay food really is. Why? The food in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and throughout the country, as well as the population, is a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Between the Chinese noodle soups and Indian curry dishes, both of which are local styles, it’s pretty difficult to distinguish what is solely Malay. Even though I couldn’t pick it out of a line up, Malay food was delicious. Check out the dishes in the slideshow below.
